General Population

Japan is the world 10th most populous country after China, India, US, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia and Nigeria. It has population of 127,417,244 (2005), of which 99% of the people are Japanese. Only 1% consists of Korean, 511,262,Chinese 244,241, Brazilians, 182,232, Filipinos, 89,851 and others 237,914. Japan is an urban society with only about 5% of the labor engaged in agriculture, resulting in largest concentration of population in urban area. 80% of the Japanese population lies on the 2% of land, on the pacific shore of Honshu and northern Kyushu.

Most of the Japanese are crowded into 645 big cities of Japan, with largest concentration on metropolitan area of Tokyo 14 millions followed by Yokohama with 3.426,651 millions, Osaka 2,598,774millions, Nagoya 2,171,557 millions and other crowded cities like, Kyoto with 1,467,785 millions, Sapporo 1,822,368, millions, Kobe 1.493,398 millions and Kitakyushu, Kawasaki and Fukuoka with over 1.5 millions, forming the overall density 342 per sq. km., confronting the same problems as that of industrialized societies throughout the world, i.e. overcrowded cities, congested highways, air pollution and rising crime, though the Japan criminal rate is the lowest in the world and is considered the most safest country for people to live in. Tokyo is the 12th most populous city in the World with density of 13333 people followed by Osaka with 4652, Yokohama 3515, Nagoya 1366, Fukuoka 1009 and Kyoto with 573 per km. The reason for concentration is a large proportions of service industry which playing an important role in the Japanese economy

Island-wise, approximately about 80% of the total population lives on Honshu 12% on Kyushu, 5% on Hokkaido and 3% of Shikoku. Prefecture-wise population depicts, Hokkaido, Iwate, Fukushima, Nigata and Tokyo with over 12 millions population, followed by Osaka and Kanagawa with more than eight millions and Aichi Saitama and Chiba between 6-7 millions.

Many peoples are farmers, mostly farming rice paddies, called TA-N-BO. Water is used, comes from the mountains. Much of the work is done manually. They also grow vegetables like peas, beans, tomatoes, corn etc. and fruits like tangerine, apple and strawberry including raising tea gardens on hillsides. As Japan is made of islands, people are living close to the water and fish being a big part of their diet, many people are fisherman, professionally as well as a part of their hobby. The seas that surrounds the island contains some of the best fishing ground which fetch Japan with15% of the global catch, ranks 3rd highest in the World after China and Peru. Japan is one of the largest consumers of fish and tropical timber. Forestry also fetches Japan lot of wood, which is used in the houses and handicrafts in which people are recognized as the best in the World. Big part of the Japanese people 1 in every four, are working in industries as Japan being the industrial country and giant producer of cars, computers and a whole array of sleek electronic goods that compete favorably with the best of west
